What was the original manmade thing to crack the sound barrier, 1st, self propelled, 2nd, just to break it?
And, no it is not things like the crack or the snap of something like a common towel which any junior high school or middle school boy who has attended physical education cles has either seen, done, or been the victim of a whip like cracking towel either prior to entering the shower, in the shower, or leaving the shower. Having been the victim of such pranks, the sting is not severe but is worse when the whip like cracking sound of the towel hits the skin at the same time. If that was breaking the sound bearer then, I should have lost not only skin, but flesh too, when a snapping and cracking towel made contact with my skin. Loud noises do not mean breaking the sound barrier which is approximately 760 mph at sea level in ordinary atmospheric conditions and approximately 660 mph above 35,000 feet in ordinary atmospheric conditions high altitude levels. By the way there never was a P-51E aircraft manufactured. Propeller driven aircraft of that era would never have the aircraft itself exceed the sound barrier because the controls of the aircraft would be under so much pressure to make them nearly immoveable by the pilot. A P-51D whose top speed was about 430 mph or so would still be 230 mph short of the speed of sound even at higher altitudes. So, P-51D/E or whip is not the answer. You can add a third category which would be the first human to break the sound barrier and in which airplane which would definitely not be a propeller driven aircraft.
