Who came up with the story of Santa Claus?

Everybody knows about Santa, and almost all adults know he's not real. But who came up with the story of Santa? I know it was probably derived from the story of St. Nick... but when did it really start coming to life and stuff? How long back does it go? Who came up with it and ped it down?
